SPICEWOOD RETREAT
By Alan Toback
Morning sun shining
through stand of mesquite trees
Herd of whitetail
deer grazing nearby
Natural beauty of
cactus and wild greenery
Tan, smooth bodies
on deer
Some males with different
size horns
A few fawns’
white tails swing as they move about
Skittish, jumpy movements
Slightest movement
alerts them to look up and stare
Male close to female,
both tan in color
He grooming her, she
standing still enjoying the precious moment
Larger beige color
female arrives on scene
Using her long legs
to kick male away from other female
A mixture of male
and female stands guard along perimeter
Watching for any intruders,
while part of sixteen members eat their morning meal
Looking over the treetops
in front of the porch swing
The horizon I see
is serenely precious
Rolling hills, light
blue haze, some green pastures in the distance
Peaceful male whitetail,
two prong horns majestically rising in the summer
Standing very still,
like a painting only an artist can do justice to
Ear lobes showing
pink color, which enhances the beauty
